Canine Good Citizen

During this six week preparatory course, you and your dog will learn the 10-steps of the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Program, with instruction on how to accomplish each step. The test will be administered during the last class of the course.

The 10 steps are:
  • Accept a friendly stranger
  • Reaction to another dog
  • Supervised separation
  • Sit politely for petting
  • Walking on a loose leash
  • Reactions to distractions
  • Walk through a crowd
  • Sit and down on command/staying in place
  • Come when called
  • Appearance and grooming

The lesson plan expands each week on each of the steps, so practice time at home is essential to your dog. Homework sheets are provided each week to help you throughout the course and we are always happy to answer your questions by telephone or email. Each 1 hour and 15 minute session includes a “question and answer” period, demonstration, practice, and polite greetings! A key component of the CGC Program is the 10-step CGC Test. All dogs, purebred or not, who pass the CGC Test receive a certificate and title from the American Kennel Club (AKC).

The course fee is $145.00 and includes the cost of the test. The number of students is limited to ensure optimum instruction, so advance registration is necessary.

Earning the CGC award will ensure that your dog is a well-respected member of your community. The training is fun and useful and you will find that the training will help you establish a closer bond with your dog.

Time:

PLEASE BE PROMPT.

Attendance:

To accomplish the goals of this course, attendance is of the utmost importance. If you must miss a class, please call us at 483-8775 to discuss how to receive your homework. If your female comes into heat during the course, please do not bring her to class. Call for alternative arrangements.

Attire:

Comfortable clothing for bending and walking is best. Shoes should be low heeled and rubber soled. Sneakers are best. No high heels, sandals, or flip flops, etc.

Feeding:

Please give your dog a light supper at least one hour before class.

Potty Time:

Please allow enough time prior to class to “go potty”. Leaving and re-entering the class can be disruptive to your fellow students and you may miss important information.

Handler:

The same person must train the dog each week. However, all family members are encouraged to learn the proper commands and methods to help the dog obey. All family members are welcome to observe class.

Advice:

While engaged in this course, please follow the instructions you will be shown. Other well-meaning friends and relatives may only confuse the techniques. As always, if you have any problems or questions, please call immediately.

Practice:

You will be instructed on each of the 10-steps to train your dog in anticipation of the test. Your dog will learn best during practice sessions at home with you. Several practice sessions of twenty minutes at different times during the day are advised. However, even 5 minutes can be very effective. Your dog will benefit from consistent and frequent sessions.

Safety:

Please do not use alcohol while training. Patience is a necessary attribute to train a dog.

Do not approach another dog without asking the handler first.

Children:

All family members are welcome to observe. Children of a certain age are welcomed as a handler (Karen attended her first course at the age of 8 years). Please have another adult attend to supervise small children. Feel free to call with any questions about this option.

Equipment:

All steps and tests are performed on leash. Dogs should wear well-fitting buckle or slip collars (including Martingales) made of leather, fabric, or chain. Harnesses are also allowed. Special training equipment such as pinch collars and head collars are not permitted.
